At 40, I started singing out loud, at 50, I started learning guitar and first time drumming with Batalá, a worldwide Brazilian Afro samba reggae band. Now, I'm playing the drum kit. Practicing daily.
I want to drum, yeah, drum, and wail. Let it rip. Play guitar. Sing, in a power trio. Do you play any instruments? No? Great!
Wanna start a band?
We can learn together.
We can learn together.
So many of us have been afraid to sing out loud, or before others, so quick to say, "Oh, no, I can't play any instruments. I don't know how." It reminds me of the story of the five year old who asks her art professor father what he does at work. When he tells her he teaches people how to draw, she replies, "You mean they forget?"
Music is life, it is born in us, yet our culture has mostly limited it to a realm of professionals and those who "know how" or sound gooood. This is draining us. We must remember we are stars, we are gods, goddesses, waves and seeds. We must remember how we come in, how before we are broken down into categories, we trust our flow, our juice, our sometimes sour, sometimes sweet, bitter tangy funky force.
Singing, drumming and dancing are primal expressions and wonderful medicine: body, spirit, heart, mind and soul.
Let's raise the vibe!
